A Welcome From The Mothers Who Came Before You

On arriving, however you arrived — and the two lines that quietly change everything.

Darling, welcome.
To this place called motherhood. We are so happy to see you here.

So come in, take your shoes off and get comfortable. You'll be here a while. We know there are many different ways to arrive here. Some unexpectedly. Some of you have dreamt about this moment for as long as you can remember. Some after years of waiting. Some cautiously, carrying just as much fear as joy. Some of you will be carrying excitement that barely fits inside your body. Others, still trying to believe it's real. However you've found your way here, we are so happy to have you.

We know the road ahead won't always be straight. It bends in ways none of us can predict. Some parts you'll sprint through, others you'll crawl through, and sometimes you'll wonder whether you're still heading in the right direction at all. You are. We promise you are. More than anything, we know you are about to flourish into the woman you are meant to be.

But before we show you around, we'd love you to stand here with us for just a moment. Because here, is where it all begins.

Two lines. That's all it takes. And your life is completely changed forever. Whether those two lines become a baby in your arms, another month of waiting, or a what could have been, they leave their mark. A pregnancy test, whether positive or negative, has an immediate and lasting impact on the mind, body and soul. It becomes your very first taste of that thing people can't stop speaking about.

Motherhood.

The thing that quietly stole so much time away from your friends. The thing that changed them in ways you couldn't understand, and the thing that made the women before you seem somehow different, as though they'd entered a world you couldn't quite comprehend. Now you get it. Or at least, you're beginning to.

In motherhood, uncertainty may begin to sink in from time to time. But certainty has a way of arriving right behind it. Worry and fear may creep in too, but love and euphoria will always find their way in and override them. This will happen time and time again, in endless different ways, yet somehow it will never stop feeling like a miracle.

You'll soon discover that motherhood is life.

Every single lesson life is trying to teach you will somehow find you here.

Patience.

Resilience.

Gratitude.

Trust.

Acceptance.

Surrender.

To name a few. Some lessons will arrive gently. Others will hit hard. But every single one serves a purpose. Maybe that's why motherhood changes you so much. It's supposed to.

It's really an extraordinary role. You'll give everything you have. Yet somehow, you'll receive more. You'll protect them. Raise them. Shape them. Nurture them into kind, thoughtful, caring adults who feel deeply loved — or at least you'll certainly try your best. It sounds so simple when written in one sentence, yet it will become the work of a lifetime. Thankfully, that's exactly how long you've got.

No one will sit you down and teach you exactly how. Then one day, it will simply begin. Like all things, some mothers seem to catch on quicker, others find it more difficult, but that's never a reflection of your worth. It's simply part of becoming a mother.

Somewhere along the way, motherhood picked up an expectation that no other role seems to carry. An expectation that you should instinctively know what you're doing from the very beginning. The truth is, in many ways you will. There will be instincts you never knew you had. But there will also be moments when you have absolutely no idea what you're doing, and that's okay too. It doesn't mean you're getting it wrong. None of us knew everything. We're still learning.

When things become hard, try to remember one thing.

Resistance. Without it, nothing grows.

Muscles don't grow without resistance. Character doesn't grow without resistance. Faith doesn't grow without resistance. Neither do mothers. It's supposed to feel hard sometimes. Birth may teach you that. Motherhood will keep teaching you that.

Perhaps your purpose on this earth isn't simply to become a mother. Perhaps it's to grow. And we can't think of a more powerful invitation than growing another human while quietly growing yourself at exactly the same time. Then, just as you begin to find your feet, they'll grow too. They'll challenge you, test you, surprise you, make you laugh, make you cry, and invite you into another season of growth all over again.

It's natural. It's beautiful. It's been happening for thousands of years. You are simply the newest woman to be welcomed in.

There will be days you'll compare yourself to other mothers. We all did. There will be days you'll wonder if everyone else is finding it easier. We all wondered that too. There will be days you'll forget yourself entirely. That's alright. You can always come back.

Because that's one of the beautiful things we'd love for you to know about motherhood.

It becomes a place you come back to yourself.
Not away from yourself. Back to yourself.

A place where you'll slowly stop caring so much about what everyone else thinks because you'll be far too busy loving the little people who think you're the whole world.

It's funny how your children can sometimes feel like they're in your way. They'll climb on you while you're trying to work. They'll call your name before you've even had a bite. They'll follow you from room to room. They'll need you at exactly the moment you thought you finally had a second to yourself.

But maybe they're not in your way. Maybe they are your way.

Maybe motherhood isn't life getting in the way. Maybe motherhood is life. The interruptions. The laughter. The exhaustion. The ordinary Mondays. The tiny hands reaching for yours. One day you'll realise these were never interruptions at all. They were the moments you'll wish you could replay.

So whenever the world feels loud, come back here. Relax your shoulders. Soften your jaw. Take a slow breath.

The world will spend so much time convincing you to want more, be more, achieve more and own more. We hope motherhood teaches you something entirely different.

To notice more.

To love more.

To be present more.

To realise that when everything else is stripped away, the things that matter most were never things at all. They were people.

And now, one of those people is yours.
