My Baby Won't Drink Frozen Breast Milk โ€” Here's What Helped

There's nothing quite like the heartbreak of pulling out a bag of carefully pumped milk, warming it up with so much care... and watching your baby push the bottle away. If this is you, take a breath โ€” it's more common than you think, and it's almost never about you.

Our recent customer told us: โ€œI have high lipase milk and my baby will now drink it after being freeze dried!โ€

Why This Happens

In most cases, it comes down to taste. Frozen milk can develop a soapy or metallic flavour due to lipase activity, and babies โ€” especially younger ones with very sensitive palates โ€” can be remarkably quick to notice.

What Other Mums Have Tried

Many mums first try mixing frozen milk with fresh milk to mask the taste, which can work for a while but isn't a long-term fix. Others have found that freeze-drying their stash changes the taste enough that their baby accepts it again โ€” because the freeze-drying process itself deactivates the lipase enzyme causing the issue.

A Second Chance for Your Stash

If you've got a freezer full of milk your baby won't touch, it doesn't have to go to waste. Converting it to freeze-dried powder is worth trying before you consider tipping it out โ€” for many families, it's been the difference between a wasted stash and a happy baby.
